Every time I think about Halloween my brain surfaces a particular memory. Its of a third grade Halloween party. I think I went as a Dalmatian dog, because our good friends the Klug's had that costume, I don't think I would have ever thought of that on my own.
Our class room was completely transformed (I had a crush on a boy named Jordan Reading, and his mom was our Class Mom.) It didn't even resemble a class room, but rather a Halloween wonderland.
I think that my love for Holidays spawned from attending Fox Hills Elementary, because holidays were always a big deal there. Also I think it was the time, before parents got so crazy about the things their kids ate, and before there was a "trunk-or-treat". (I straight remember going trick or treating alone, I mean not all alone, but sans parents.)
That's not a slam to my parents in anyway, just things were different you know? Also I remember there being hordes of us, thousands of kids trying to navigate the sidewalks.
Anyhoo, we partied the whole day, ate Haloween-y delicacies, and watched movies.
After that I also remember going home early, cause it was a short day, and walking down stairs, with the biggest bag of candy.
My brother Jeff was watching Salem's Lot, and we sat on the couch together watching the movie and eating candy.
Salem's Lot has been a constant pat of many subsequent Halloweens, so you can guess my purest joy when Blockbuster had it!
Only the clerk looked it up, found it, and put it all in a bag before we could see it. It wasn't until we were on our way home that we realized it was a remake with Rob Lowe.
Also it wasn't until we were an hour and a half into that version (when nothing was happening) that we realized it was 3 hours long.
However, I will always remember this Halloween because of Book Club, Jumping a car, getting hit on by a neighbor I never knew I had whilst jumping that car, getting movies, The BEST Chicken Tortilla Soup, a lame party, and 3 hours of Salem's Lot.
It was good, but the original is better.
PS. Riddle me this... Why can I recall my 3rd grade Halloween like it was yesterday, but cant remember the day I signed up to give a speech?
